Meter Change-Out Program
Meter   Dear Customer,

On November 1st, 2020, the SMLD will begin changing out residential and business electric meters. The Meter Change-Out Project is in anticipation of our new AMI System and will take approximately 2-3 months to complete. Signs will be posted in the areas where we will be working, and a street list and work schedule will be posted on our website at www.energysterling.com. SMLD employees will display photo identification and will knock on your door prior to swapping the meter to advise you of a brief outage.

If you would like to schedule your meter change for a time that is more convenient for you or if we arrive at an inconvenient time, please call our office Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 978-422-8267.

I want to emphasize that there is no reason for anyone to enter your home.

This project will cost $610,520.00 and will not affect customer rates. The project is fully funded from our working capital and will not incur any debt. The purpose for the meter change is that in 2008 the SMLD launched one of the first Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) Systems in the area. Now, 12 years later, the technology has run its course. With the increased software support costs, meter failures, and the cost to read and replace them, we felt it best to replace the system as opposed to continue with repairs before the system becomes obsolete.

After careful evaluation of the top (3) AMI vendors that responded to our Request for Proposals (RFP), we chose Eaton Corporation who is a leader in the industry. The selection of Eaton was significant, allowing us to further reduce the cost of the new system, as we already use their technology to monitor our substation and operate our Controlled Service Program. We were also able to reduce costs by using the recently installed fiber cable to deliver data back to our office. Once the project is complete, we will be able to roll out our Outage Management System (OMS) that has been built for quite some time but is not being utilized due to technology limitations in our old system.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation during this project.

Sincerely,

Sean Hamilton
General Manager
