SMLD Energy Storage System - A Revolution For The Electric Grid

*Update: It was just last October that SMLD held the groundbreaking ceremony for its 2-megawatt, 3.9-megawatt-hour battery storage system—the first of its kind in Massachusetts. The project was designed to provide Sterling with emergency backup power during severe weather events, as well as lower utility costs. The system went live for the first time during a cold spell in December, just 33 working days after breaking ground, and shaved demand charges by about $17 thousand dollars for the month of December.

The project was three years in the making and was funded in part by grants of $1.463 million from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources under the direction of Commissioner Judith Judson and the Community Clean Energy Resiliency Initiative also $250,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Storage Division under the directions of Dr. Imre Gyuk. With technical support provide by The Sandia National Labs and the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) under a grant provided by the Barr Foundation. It was purchased from commissioned by NEC Energy Solutions, with headquarters located in Westborough Massachusetts..
